Paper published in the Journal of Emergent Science by Dr Teo Tang Wee
Dr Teo Tang Wee, Assistant Professor at the Natural Sciences & Science Education (NSSE), Dr Yan Yaw Kai, Head of the Natural Sciences & Science Education (NSSE) Academic Group (AG) of NIE and Research Assistant Ms Goh Mei Ting, co-published a paper in the Journal of Emergent Science based on an OER project titled “Children are Natural Scientists: Learning Science in Early Childhood and Early Primary Years”.
In their paper titled “Using Prediction-Observation-Explanation-Revision to Structure Young Children’s Learning about Floating and Sinking”, they described how prediction-observation-explanation-revision (POER) was adopted as a teaching strategy to structure children’s (aged 8) learning about floating and sinking. This study offers an example of how POER, when engaged by teachers, allows for children to voice their multiple viewpoints and can promote children’s active participation in rich discourse.
