The commentary noted that the Singapore Centre for Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) aimed to promote research on effective pedagogies and provide professional training to teachers to enhance students' values education. The writer highlighted the importance of values education in schools, emphasising the need for students to have correct values and social awareness alongside academic achievements. The writer felt that besides a new CCE curriculum, it was also necessary to research the best ways to teach the subject and to train teachers in pedagogies appropriate to the local context. He added that in addition to teaching methods, it was important for teachers to be role models to their students. The writer also suggested that CCE lessons be taught in the Mother Tongue Languages. As for teaching materials, he suggested that besides physical textbooks, schools could set a CCE theme each week, where school leaders or discipline masters could explain the meaning of the values during school assemblies. In conclusion, the writer called upon families, community organisations and clan associations to support schools’ efforts in building students’ good character to achieve the best results.
