LKCMedicine Students Visit Imperial College London for Immersive Experience
Imperial College School of Medicine (ICSM) recently hosted a cohort of students from Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) for their annual Imperial Immersion Week. The programme, which spanned one week at the beginning of March, brought 22 LKCMedicine students to London for an enriching exchange of medical education practices and cultural experiences.
This year’s Imperial Immersion Week initiative was a carefully curated schedule balancing academic enrichment with social activities, creating a comprehensive experience for the visiting students.
The academic portion featured several highlights that resonated strongly with the LKCMedicine cohort. Students participated in sessions at the Pathology Museum and Science Museum, engaging in reflective learning practices. The LKCMedicine students had the pleasure of visiting the Human Anatomy Unit, providing a new, invaluable hands-on experience of examining the human form in its truest essence.
Additionally, the programme showcased diverse pedagogical approaches, including a session on First Aid in remote environments and the Stabbed to Stable activity, led by our very own Dr James Moss of whom the students were a massive fan! This offered the students exposure to different educational methodologies than those employed at their home medical school.
Beyond the classroom, the ICSM Students' Union facilitated numerous social engagements to immerse the visitors in ICSM life. On the very first day, we saw ICSM and LKCMedicine students alike show their competitive streak in a lively game of Scavenger Hunt around the South Kensington Campus. Later that week, we enjoyed a spirited evening of darts at Gravity Wandsworth, followed by a visit to London’s finest pizzeria in Fulham, which certainly was very delicious!
The moments ICSMSU shared with the LKCMedicine students fostered meaningful discussions about the contrasts between medical education in the United Kingdom and Singapore, enriching the perspectives of participants from both institutions. The LKCMedicine students also embraced London's artistic offerings, attending West End performances of beloved musicals "Matilda" and "Les Misérables."

On the final day of the Imperial Immersion Week, ICSMSU presented their guests with school merchandise – hoodies and t-shirts – providing tangible mementos of their time in London. The ICSMSU committee members expressed their gratitude to the LKCMedicine students for their engagement and enthusiasm throughout the week. Next up, ICSM looks forward to seeing students come over for their medical elective placements near the end of the Year 5 studies.
