Assistant Professor Tanmay Sinha and Professor Courtenay Norbury share at the Strategic Growth Area Science of Learning Seminar Series

Assistant Professor Tanmay Sinha from NIE’s Learning Sciences and Assessment Academic Department, gave a talk titled “Shame Regulation in Learning: A Double-Edged Sword” on 23 September 2024 as part of the monthly Strategic Growth Area Science of Learning (SGA SoL) seminar series. He was hosted by Dr Aishah Abdul Rahman, Education Research Scientist from Science of Learning in Education Centre (SoLEC). In this talk, he presented a high-fidelity intervention to show how, and why, designing for experiences of shame and appropriately regulating it can differentially impact learning. Results from the intervention implicate channelling teaching efforts to facilitate experiencing emotions that are goal-conducive, whether they feel pleasurable or not, and which may inevitably involve emoting both the positive and negative (e.g., shame) in moderation.

Prof Courtenay Norbury, Vice Dean Research, University College London, gave a talk on “Education pathways for children with language difficulties and disorders” on 15 October 2024 as part of the monthly SGA SoL seminar series. She was hosted by Dr Shaun Goh, Education Research Scientist from the Centre of Research in Child Development (CRCD) and Dr Aishah Abdul Rahman, SoLEC. Prof Norbury’s talk touched on international studies that suggested 7-8% kindergarten children (approximately 2 per classroom) do not have sufficient language skills to succeed in the classroom. This is of concern to education systems around the world, as early language is a foundational skill for later literacy, language difficulties are often persistent throughout the school years and predict socio-emotional health. A tiered model for supporting children with language needs, with examples from around the world, was discussed. Prof Coutenay also shared findings of international and local relevance, specifically related to: (a) the profile of children with language needs in early childhood and adolescence (Paul, Norbury & Gosse, 2024), and (b) a tiered model for supporting children with language needs (Ebbels,..Norbury, 2019).
