Researchers from NIE were invited to speak at “The Stress Symposium: Rethinking Stress Experienced by Adolescents in Singapore”

On 27 April 2023, the Child and Human Development (CHD) Strategic Growth Area and the Office of Education Research (OER) Professional Development Committee jointly organised "The Stress Symposium: Rethinking Stress Experienced by Adolescents in Singapore". The symposium sought to provide research-based insights on stress, stress minds and coping of adolescents in Singapore. Dr Imelda Caleon, Assistant Dean (Partnerships) at the OER, Senior Education Research Scientist at the Science of Learning in Education Centre (SoLEC), and the Principal Investigator (PI) of the stress-focused project, started the session by giving an overview of the project.

The first pair of presenters were Dr Munirah Kadir, a co-PI of the study and an Education Research Scientist from the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice (CRPP), and Ms Jessica Zhou, a Research Assistant from CRPP, where they shared about adolescents’ perceived stressors.

After their presentation, Dr Tan Chee Soon, co-PI and a Senior Teaching Fellow from the Psychology and Child and Human Development Academic Group, as well as Dr Rosanne Jocson, co-PI and an Education Research Scientist from the Centre for Research in Child Development (CRCD), presented about adolescents’ coping strategies when dealing with stress.

Ms Nur Qamarina Ilham and Ms Surbhi Arora, a Research Associate and Research Assistant from CRPP, respectively, presented about resilience and its association with coping strategies for stress.

The final presentation by Dr Caleon, with inputs from another project co-PI, Ms Jenny Tan, Lead Specialist from the Guidance Student Development Curriculum Division at the Ministry of Education (MOE), was on the stress mindset of adolescents and its association with their resilience and wellbeing.

The session was attended by more than 60 educators from schools, NIE researchers, MOE officers, and others from local organisations and institutes of higher learning.
