Certificate in English Language Subject Content Knowledge for Teachers (Basic Level)

Overview

This certificate programme seeks to provide participants with an understanding of key concepts and theories within the fields of English Language Studies and English Language Teaching that will equip them to implement the MOE English Language syllabus more effectively. Specifically, the programme aims to:

  • build foundational disciplinary and subject content knowledge through introducing participants to a range of key concepts in the areas of linguistics, applied linguistics, and English language studies
  • enhance participants’ knowledge of the pronunciation, lexis, and grammar of English
  • develop participants’ understanding of the various language skills
  • develop participants’ awareness of the relevance of linguistics to English language use and learning.

This certificate programme is for educators who meet the following entry requirements:

  1. a Diploma in Education (Dip Ed) OR a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from NIE or equivalent, and
  2. a minimum of two years of teaching experience

This course is not for educators who have studied English Language as an Academic Subject / major at university.

This certificate consists of three courses totaling 9 academic units (AUs) which is equivalent to 117 hours.

CourseDescription
IEL1060 Introduction to Language StudiesThis course offers an introduction to the study of language and applied linguistics. It aims to build foundational disciplinary and subject content knowledge through the exploration of key issues and ideas within language/linguistics studies. Through the study of topics such as language change and variation, language acquisition and development, bilingualism and biliteracy, semantics, pragmatics, and discourse analysis, participants will learn to appreciate the relevance of linguistics to language teaching and learning, and in the process grow in their confidence as English Language teachers.
IEL1061 Sounds, Words, and GrammarThis course aims to strengthen the participants’ knowledge of the pronunciation, lexis, and grammar of English, in order to equip them to implement the MOE English Language 2020 syllabus effectively. Participants will engage in a range of listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities which will raise their awareness of how phonological, lexical, and grammatical features of English combine to express meaning. Authentic texts appropriate to the participants’ teaching contexts will be used to demonstrate how sounds, words, and grammar are used to realise meaning in texts.
IEL1062 Understanding the Language SkillsThis course aims to strengthen participants’ knowledge of the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and representing. Participants will be introduced to the theories and principles underpinning these language skills and engage in critical discussions on how this knowledge and awareness helps them to understand language use, language teaching, and language learning.
