Certificate in Teaching Students with Hearing Loss
Overview
- To develop greater knowledge of appropriate supports for students with hearing loss in the classroom.
- To understand the development of language and social emotional needs in students with hearing loss.
- To deepen the understanding of teaching approaches to support communication, language and literacy learning.
This certificate programme is for:
- Teachers with a teaching qualification (e.g. Diploma in Education, Diploma in Special Education) or equivalent
- Education interpreters (employed by SADeaf) with a local polytechnic diploma or an ‘A’ level certificate or plus a letter of recommendation from their respective school principals before gaining admission into the programme. The education interpreters must have a minimum of 1 year experience in supporting students with hearing loss in the school.
OR
This certificate consists of five courses totaling 9 academic units (AUs) which is equivalent to 117 hours. These courses provide participants on the essential practices and theories on teaching students with hearing loss, therefore, participants have to fulfill all courses.

IEC0109 Introduction to Education for Students with Hearing Loss | This course aims to provide participants with a general introduction to history and evolution of hearing loss (HL) education in the local and global context. |
IEC1010 Educational Audiology | This course provides participants with the audiological knowledge and skills needed in supporting and maximising student’s auditory potential in various settings. It introduces the functions of the various parts of the ear and the physics of sound. |
IEC0111 Language and Social Emotional Development of Students with Hearing Loss | This course provides participants an understanding of current thinking and theories of language development and social emotional development. Participants will be provided with an overview of main issues concerning with the processes of language acquisition in typically-developing students. |
IEC0112 Supporting Students with Hearing Loss in the Classroom | This course will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to implement appropriate support, accommodations and modifications for students with hearing loss in the classroom. This would entail the selection of appropriate communication strategies for use with students in a classroom setting. |
IEC0113 Specialised Teaching Approaches | Participants will explore contemporary theories and practices of oral and signing approaches of language and literacy learning. Participants will focus on developing and implementing classroom methods and strategies for language teaching and assessment. They will develop practical competence in the use of signing or oral language approaches for pedagogical purposes. |
