Shaping the Future: NTU’s Public Policy and Global Affairs (PPGA) Programme

Since its inception in 2013, NTU’s Public Policy and Global Affairs (PPGA) programme has stood out as a trailblazer in interdisciplinary education. This innovative programme provides students with the practical knowledge and skill sets needed to tackle complex global issues facing political leaders, policymakers, and communities worldwide.

PPGA’s diverse course offerings build a robust foundation in politics, international relations, public administration, and public policy. Students are groomed to become thought leaders, ready to address today’s challenges and craft sustainable solutions for the future. PPGA graduates thrive across various sectors—public, private, and non-profit - making impactful contributions regionally and globally.

 

Programmes

 

Double Major Programme

Double Major BSocSci (Hons)

As a School of College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS), we also offer a Double Major programme. The Double Major programme is a four-year, direct Honours degree programme. Undergraduates will read two majors chosen from among the disciplinary strengths of the four schools in HASS—School of Art, Design and Media (ADM), School of Humanities (SoH), SSS, and Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI).

The weightage of each major is equal, and students will have the opportunity to complete Graduate Projects from each major.

Second Major Programme

At NTU, students majoring in Public Policy and Global Affairs will also have the opportunity to pursue a Second Major.

Qualified students may take a second major in another discipline offered within the School of Social Sciences, or one offered by another School within the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS).

Students will need to read 11 courses specific to the field of study, which includes both the Major Core Subjects and Major Prescribed Electives. They will have to complete 135 to 138 Academic Units to be eligible to graduate with a Second Major. Students will graduate with a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in their First Major. The Second Major will be shown on the final transcript and students will receive an additional certificate.

Second Major in PPGA

To read Public Policy and Global Affairs as their second major, students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 4.0 in their first year at university. Due to limited spaces, admission to the second major is based on academic merit.

Students who choose Public Policy and Global Affairs as their second major are required to complete the 3 core courses below and at least 8 prescribed electives (at least 2 must be level 4000 courses).

  • HA1001 Introduction to International Relations and Foreign Policy
  • HA1003 Introduction to Public Administration and Policy
  • HA1012 Fundamentals of Politics

Students must complete at least 8 prescribed electives, out of which at least 2 must be level 4000 courses.

HA1002 and HA1011 can be taken as prescribed electives.

Minor Programme

Minor in PPGA

*For students who are (i) PPGA minor students admitted in 2016 and after and (ii) are admitted before 2016 but commenced the PPGA minor in 2016 and after.

Public Policy and Global Affairs (PPGA) is an interdisciplinary study of policy issues with global and regional dimensions. This minor enables students to understand the challenges faced by domestic and international governance. It equips students with wide-range practical skills to tackle these policy problems in Singapore and beyond.

To satisfy the requirements for a minor in Public Policy and Global Affairs, students must complete at least five courses (minimum 15 credits), including two compulsory courses, with the remaining to be selected from the below list of electives. The compulsory courses help students develop a comprehensive understanding of the fields of International Relations, Public Policy and Public Administration. 

  • HA1003 Introduction to Public Administration and Policy
  • HA1012 Fundamentals of Politics 

Students must complete 3 PPGA electives.

Students are to check for course pre-requisites in considering their combination of PPGA courses.
