Ms Chong Xiao Ying
NTU EEE graduand Chong Xiao Ying graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic Engineering) with Honours (Highest Distinction). She is a NTU Nanyang Scholarship awardee and she shares with us the memories of spending her time in EEE.
Xiao Ying had quite a sparkling undergraduate career - she was the winner of the EEE Chair Award as well as the AY19/20 NTU URECA Undergraduate Research Excellence Award, winner of the DSO National Laboratories Scholarships for Aspiring Researchers (SOAR) and winner of the AY21/22 ST Engineering Electronics Book Prize.
Outside the classroom, Xiao Ying loved hanging out with her EEE coursemates in between and after classes. Being among peers allowed her to recharge after classes. During her time in EEE, she was surprised at how friendly the professors were. Chatting with them, some of whom were graduates of NTU EEE themselves, and getting to know more about them and their experiences gave her confidence in her academic decisions.
Xiao Ying feels that EEE’s broad curriculum ranging from power engineering, robotics, wireless communications and artificial intelligence provides students with various experiences to discover their areas of interest. Making friends with course mates with diverse skills helped her broaden her mind on various technologies and industries. She also realised the importance of forging friendships by going through similar experiences. Through planning a freshmen orientation program and various outreach events such as Induction Fiesta, she met and made friends with so many course mates that she may otherwise not have ever crossed paths.
Xiao Ying says that having passionate and down-to-earth professors who make classes both enriching and enjoyable was also one of the most memorable aspects of her academic life. Through the Signals & Systems module, she gained an interest in learning more about signal processing and AI which helped kickstart her career. While acknowledging that academics are important, she advises her juniors not to forget the other experiences that university education provides. “Getting the opportunity to plan for large-scale events for students helped me develop myself holistically as a student," she said.
