The Visiting Professorship aims to bring in experienced professors or scholars to advise, teach and collaborate on research within the field of Malay Studies at NIE, give public lectures and publish the MAS Professorial Lecture and Research Series, thereby further enhancing the academic rigour and international recognition of this subject area.

About Dr Muhammad Ariff Ahmad

The late Dr Muhammad Ariff Ahmad (6 December 1924 to 23 March 2016) is celebrated for his unparalleled contributions to Singapore’s nation-building particularly in literature, Malay language, and Malay education. His influence permeates various domains, marked notably by his involvement in crafting the lyrics of Majulah Singapura and his extensive roles in numerous national councils and committees.

A former lecturer at the Institute of Education, Patterson Road, Dr Ariff’s profound impact on Malay language education and his bestowed title of ‘pendeta’ (a Sage), affirm the deserved establishment of Muhammad Ariff Ahmad Professorship, ensuring his legacy of wisdom and dedication continues to inspire future generations.

Dr Muhammad Ariff Ahmad Research and Resource Hub (MAS RRH@LIBRIS) showcases artefacts, manuscripts and publications by/about Dr Muhammad Ariff Ahmad (MAS). It was unveiled by Madam Halimah Yacob, eighth President of Singapore, on 31 March 2021.

The aims of MAS RRH@LIBRIS are to provide resources by/about MAS, and motivate the younger generation, in particular students, academics, researchers, Malay language teachers and literary enthusiasts, to read and carry out research in Malay language, literature and culture.
