CAL0001 Create a Chinese Conducive Environment for Your Child
Course Synopsis
This will be an enriching, stimulating and interactive workshop to share some of the best practices and research-justified theories to create Chinese- and Mandarin-conducive family and school environments for young children and primary school students in the local Singapore context. Through this session, local parents and educators and look forward to practical ideas and interesting resources to establish a stimulating, resource-rich and an emotionally-positive environment to nurture Chinese language acquisition amongst our young children.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, participants should be able to:
- Learn about language acquisition and learning theories applicable to the Singapore context
- Acquire practical and usable ideas to create a conducive family and school environment for language acquisition/learning for our Chinese preschoolers
- Develop a resource list for Chinese language acquisition/learning, especially for our young children and primary school students

- Language acquisition theories
- Best practices and practical ideas for Chinese language environment creation
- Resources and their rationale for Chinese language learning
Course Instructor(s)

Associate Prof Tan Chee Lay, Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC)
Associate Professor Tan Chee Lay is the Associate Dean (Graduate Education by Coursework) at NIE, NTU. Holding a PhD in Oriental Studies from Cambridge University, he has extensive experience in Chinese language education and bilingual studies. A recipient of the Young Artist Award and Singapore Youth Award, he has held leadership roles in language education and research. He has won multiple teaching and research awards and is an invited keynote speaker across the region. A prolific writer, he has published nearly 30 books spanning academic research, poetry, and children’s literature, contributing significantly to Chinese language and cultural education.
