CHS0001 Facilitating Conversations about Climate Change with Children

Course Synopsis

This course will provide you an opportunity to learn about climate science and discover effective communication techniques that will resonate with children. You’ll gain practical tips on how to inspire positive action through everyday eco-friendly practices. Whether you’re facing tough questions or want to empower children to make a difference, this workshop will help you turn climate conversations into meaningful and inspiring experiences together.

 

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Have fundamental knowledge of climate science to engage with children confidently.
  2. Offer practical communication ideas to navigate sensitive topics, such as eco-anxiety and activism.
  3. Provide tips on fostering positive actions and sustainability habits within the household.

  2. Understanding the curriculum
  3. Communicating with “woke” kids
  4. Planning and strategizing meaningful action

Professor Chang Chew Hung, Humanities & Social Studies Education (HSSE)

Professor Chang Chew Hung, the Sustainability Officer for the National Institute of Education (NIE), is a leading expert in geography and environmental education. His research focuses on correcting climate change misconceptions and geography curriculum development. His research is well-cited and he is ranked 11th globally in Climate Change Education on Google Scholar. An awardee of the NIE Commendation on teaching, he spearheaded initiatives like the NIE statement on AI for education and was involved in curriculum design for the compulsory Sustainability Interdisciplinary Collaborative Core subject at the university. He also holds leadership roles in international geography associations and academic journals.
