Undergraduate Programmes
As current and future educators, NIE’s undergraduate English Language and Literature teacher preparation programme will provide you with in-depth knowledge on a wide range of linguistic and literary topics, such as sociolinguistics, language acquisition, literary theory, and critical theory. Embracing interdisciplinarity, our courses feature perspectives from diverse fields, such as Sociology and Cultural Studies, placing Singapore at the crossroads of global and local confluences that shape how the English language is attuned to cosmopolitan moments of textual interactions and societal melding. Our faculty are sensitive to the fact that literacy in today’s media-saturated world is a highly complex enterprise, and thus emphasise the impact of multimodality on teaching and learning. With a wide range of courses on offer, our structured approach to undergraduate studies balances breadth of exposure with critical depth, and also achieves a balance between theory and practice, providing you with expertise in both your English language/literature content area and the field of education, with our curriculum studies courses enabling you to address the real needs of the future classrooms you will step into as educational leaders. Experiential learning features prominently in our teacher preparation programme, providing opportunities for you to directly apply your acquired knowledge and skills, with undergraduate research projects, in-class micro-teaching, and teaching practicum experiences in Singapore schools. Numerous international exchange opportunities further cultivate your ability to connect theory and practice while broadening your global outlook.
