Biography
As an educator, Jane believes that each student has their unique strengths and talents. Through her years of experience in various streams and profiles of students, she believes that a teacher is very influential in the classroom and a good teacher will be able to help students draw out their talent and reach their potential.
Jane was formerly a History Senior Teacher at a mainstream secondary school. Her role as the Senior Teacher gave her the opportunity to mentor younger teachers and also developed Professional Development courses and materials within school and also at the national level. Jane has also worked with the Academy of Singapore Teachers (AST) on various projects, such as The Use of Art in History and the teaching of causation in the History Classroom. She was also invited to share her classroom experiences with History Beginning Teachers when AST conducted the workshop. Due to the various contribution to the History fraternity, Jane was awarded the Outstanding History Teacher Award in 2018.
Besides History, Jane has also taken on various projects in the Social Studies fraternity. She co-design and share the Proximity of Solution Framework: an approach to teach SRQ in Social Studies at the CPDD Social Studies Curriculum Leaders’ Sharing Session in 2016. She was a part of a group that did an action research, titled Making the discussion approach work in the Singapore Classroom, and the action research was presented at Redesigning Pedagogy International Conference in 2017.
In school, Jane has co-designed and co-led the school’s distinctive Applied Learning Programme (ALP), which focuses on the development of students’ literacies skills, information literacies and communication skills, so that students can take multiple perspectives and understand our society we live in better. The programme also aims to equip students with effective communication and critical thinking skills to enable them to be innovative and civic minded individuals. Through the programme, Jane got the opportunity to design interesting and engaging curriculum where students are exposed to various platforms and media to gain knowledge about History and Social Studies.
