Making e-waste plastic reuse greener

Plastics from electronic waste (e-waste) pose an environmental and health hazard if not disposed of properly as they often contain toxic chemical additives.

Now, NTU scientists have come up with a way to make e-waste plastic recycling safer. Using a mixture of solvents, they dissolved and removed flame-retardant chemicals from plastic used in keyboard and laptop casings.

The researchers could recover over 80 per cent of the plastic after the contaminants were removed, which facilitates the recovery of clean plastic and increases the recycling of e-waste plastic.
