PGDE Primary Programme

All student teachers enrolled in the General Track of the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Primary Programme are required to do English as one of their specializations. The PGDE Primary English is made up of two Curriculum Studies (CS) and two Subject Knowledge (SK) courses and their course descriptions are reflected below.

CURRICULUM STUDIES (CS)

QCE50R: Teaching English in the Primary School I
This course will equip student teachers with the knowledge of processes and strategies in the teaching and learning of English in the primary school. Student teachers will learn about the connections among home, community, and school for meaningfully supported language learning. In addition, student teachers will learn a variety of assessment tools to monitor pupils’ language skills for the purpose of improving teaching and learning. Links between theory and practice will be made as student teachers plan lessons for school contexts. Student teachers will use the current English Language syllabus as an essential resource in assisting them to connect theory to practice through the principles, processes, and learning outcomes of the syllabus.

QCE50S: Teaching English in the Primary School II
This course will build on student teachers’ knowledge acquired in the previous semester and equip student teachers with a deeper and broader understanding of processes and strategies in the teaching and learning of English in the primary school, including the skills to teach grammar and vocabulary explicitly. In addition, student teachers will learn a variety of tools to monitor pupils’ language skills and for pupils to self-monitor their language skills for the purpose of improving teaching and learning. Student teachers will deepen their knowledge in connecting theory to practice through the principles, processes, and learning outcomes of the syllabi.

SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE (SK)

QSE50C: Grammar
This course deepens student teachers’ knowledge of the grammatical structures of the English Language, enabling them to understand the language requirements of the English Language Syllabus. It looks at how grammar works, and how words and larger constituents may be analyzed according to meaning, form and function. Student teachers will be equipped with grammatical knowledge required for effective classroom teaching and assessment.

QSE50D: Children’s Literature
This course will equip you with subject knowledge about children’s literature to support children’s development of reading and encourage positive attitudes to and motivation for reading. A range of children’s literature will be studied from a variety of analytical perspectives. Specific examples will be provided or sourced by you for discussion, analysis, and examination of potential effects. You will learn how to interpret contemporary reading habits, preferences, and motivations by drawing on your own experiences of reading as well as through the analysis of research data. Building reading in schools in spaces outside the curriculum through libraries and extensive reading programmes to create a school culture of reading will be another aspect of study.
