APPLIED SPORTS INJURIES [course outline]
This course is designed to apply knowledge on sports injuries to various contexts of practice. The course will be built upon basic knowledge and understanding of anatomy, biomechanics and fundamental aspects of sports injuries. You will learn the skills of elastic wrapping, sports taping, kinesiotaping, and sports massage. Theoretical and applied aspects of the principles of sports injury rehabilitation and return to play will also be covered, followed by a field visit to a sports physiotherapy and rehabilitation centre. The course will also include youth and female gender-specific physical and physiological attributes, injury risks and epidemiology in these sporting populations. Learning the strategies of injury prevention and related research methods will also be a part of the course. In addition, the course will include topics on the science and applications of popular products like running shoes, foam rolling and compression garments and their potential use for injury prevention and athletic performance. This course will provide a strong foundation on applied aspects of sports injuries, and the learning from this course can be translated into various contexts like training and competitions, exercise prescription, high-performance training, strength training and conditioning, fitness development, recovery and fatigue management, coaching and athlete development, sports injury rehabilitation, and development and evaluation of injury prevention programmes.

A lecture/laboratory course designed to provide a basic framework that will aid you in acquiring knowledge and technical laboratory skills pertinent to exercise physiology. The laboratory techniques and knowledge will help you understand the demands of training on the body and will enable them to prescribe exercise or training for optimal health and elite performance. Emphasis will be placed on the energy systems and the prediction of performance in endurance and high-intensity events. The importance of psychophysical responses to muscular effort and the ratings to different assessment modes will also be emphasised.

This course aims to examine the role and challenges the environment plays in sport. The course is designed to be an upper-level exercise physiology module for undergraduate sport science students. The course will introduce you to the physiological adaptations and challenges faced by athletes/exercising individuals across the entire spectrum of environments, including heat, cold, altitude, pollution, underwater and in response to microgravity and bed rest. In addition, strategies to overcome these challenges will be examined. Laboratories will provide hands-on opportunities to examine some of these challenges, and guest lectures/visits will support the lecture material.

This course aims to examine the role of nutrition in supporting the physical and mental performance, growth, and health and fitness of athletes. The course is designed as an upper-level course for undergraduate sport science students. It will cover a range of content related to the energy requirements of athletes, the role of individual macronutrients in assisting performance and growth, the use of micronutrients in supporting athlete health, evidence related to the intake and use of nutritional supplements, the role of sports drinks for athletic performance, eating disorders among athletes, and nutrition to support immune function.

This course aims to equip you with knowledge of how the brain and muscles coordinate and control the development of motor skills and movement over the lifespan in both healthy development and those with neurodevelopmental or neuromuscular conditions. Through a combination of theory and practical classes, you will appreciate individual differences in motor development and control and some of the research and techniques used to assess motor control. You will also be introduced to the role of exercise on motor development and control over the lifespan.

This applied sport psychology course targets students considering psychological skills training (PST) as a useful tool for enhancing sport performance. Specifically, you will be introduced to the role of the applied sport psychologist; the development, implementation and evaluation of PST; and the theories underpinning each psychological skill. This course will be both theoretical and practical based.

This course builds on the work undertaken in the foundation of sport coaching and critically examines the understanding and application of sport pedagogy (learning theories and instructional modes) to the sport environment. You will be given opportunities to observe and sample some coaching sessions by experienced instructors/coaches and discuss practical issues from applying the coaching theories learned. In addition, best practices from successful sporting countries will also be explored to give you an international perspective on sport coaching.

SPORT IN SOCIETY [course outline]
This course is designed to cover a body of knowledge in the sociology of sport and to think sociologically about sports. It introduces you to the societal issues of sports, including physical education (PE) in the respective countries. This course also develops your critical thinking and analytical skills based on observing documentary evidence and doing fieldwork, so you will be able to learn how to evaluate and compare sports in respective locations.
This course also examines the cultural elements of the development of PE and sports in society today with a Singaporean perspective and international comparisons. Diverse social phenomena relating to PE and sports experienced in the real world using sociological imagination will be introduced. Using theoretical frameworks to undertake the course is also relevant to broader lifelong education objectives.
