Admission Intakes
Academic Year in NTU commences in August and ends in July of the following year.
School of MAE has 2 PhD intakes per Academic Year, one in August and another in January.

Applicants from Local Universities
- A Bachelor's degree with minimum 2nd class Honours Upper or *Honours (Distinction).
- *All NTU first degree students graduating from January 2018 onwards will be awarded degrees according to the new classification nomenclature, regardless of their intake year.
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS) are not required for graduates of the Autonomous Universities in Singapore.
Applicants from Overseas Universities
- Based on first degree (Bachelor degree).
- A relevant Bachelor's degree with at least 2nd class Honours Upper or equivalent.
- All applicants from overseas universities must provide GRE. Applicants from India may use GATE in place of GRE.
- Minimum GRE score of ≥ 319/3.5 where score for verbal (V) and quantitative (Q) equivalent to or more than 319 and analytical writing score is at least 3.5. Test dates must be within 5 years from the date of your application.
- Minimum GATE score of at least 90th percentile. Test date must be within 3 years from the date of your application.
- Minimum either TOEFL score of ≥600 (paper-based) / ≥250 (computer-based) / ≥100 (internet-based) or IELTS score of 6.5. Test dates must be within 2 years from the date of your application.
- Waiver of TOEFL/IELTS granted if applicant can submit documentation that English was used as the medium of instruction during the Bachelor studies (documentary proof is usually in a form of official letter from the Bachelor degree University or certificate and must be submitted in application portal).
- The official GATE/GRE/TOEFL/IELTS score sheets are required to be submitted during application.

General Eligibility Criteria:
- Must have done at least 1 semester coursework in NTU (under PhD programme)
- Must have attained at least CGPA 3.50 (PhD).
Documents to prepare:
- A copy of the transcript of course(s) taken before.
- Course syllabus of previous course and current course syllabus to apply exemption for.
- Highlight the similar syllabus/topics that you have taken before
Candidates pursue an independent but supervised research in an approved field of advanced study based on which a thesis must be submitted. Candidates are also required to attend classes and pass the examinations to earn at least 18 AU (for e.g. 6 3-AU courses) in PhD study. They will have to undergo a Qualifying Examination/Confirmation Exercise.
Upon the completion of the research, the candidate is required to submit a thesis on his/her research for examination. For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, there is also an oral examination on the subject matter on his/her thesis and other related subjects.

5. Two Academic Referees' Reports
- Provide the name and institutional email addresses of two (2) academic referees.
- The Referee email address must be an Official institutional email address. Email address given by the free-email provider will not be accepted (i.e. email address given by hotmail, gmail, yahoo, qq, etc).
- Upon submission of the online application, it will auto-activate an email with login ID and password to the respective Referee to notify them to complete an online Referee Report. Do ask your Referee to look out for the email in inbox/ junk mail and complete it within 14 working days upon receipt.
- It is important to key in the correct email address for your Referee, as changes cannot be made to the online application after its submission.
