Tips and Guide
As educators begin to utilise GenAI tools like ChatGPT in the classroom, there are some basic applications that can augment and streamline existing pedagogical activities. Some basic principles to follow are to start small, focus on GenAI's current capabilities rather than limitations, and prioritise oversight to ensure accuracy. Here are some examples from chapter 3 of the free ebook Generative AI in Higher Education (Chan & Colloton, 2024).
Teaching:
- Generate outlines, lesson plans, introductory content for new topics
- Create practice quizzes/tests aligned with learning objectives
- Provide explanations of concepts in simple terms
Learning:
- Act as a interactive tutor to clarify concepts and misunderstandings
- Summarise reading materials/lectures into study guides
- Generate practice problems and worked examples
Research:
- Assist with literature reviews by summarising and synthesising papers
- Suggest relevant sources and citations on a topic
- Help frame research questions and hypotheses
Administrative:
- Answer frequently asked questions from students
- Draft emails, memos, reports using provided prompts
- Manage calendars and schedule appointments
