Sembcorp-EMA Energy Challenge (SEEC) 2021
Name of the competition: Sembcorp-EMA Energy Challenge (SEEC) 2021
About the competition: The SEEC is a national competition that aims to
engage and challenge the energy professionals of tomorrow. Participants choose
their avatars and take on the role of a power engineer in the Power Quest
simulation game where they undergo a series of challenges that test their
response to the energy trilemma - energy security, environmental sustainability
and economic competitiveness.
Date of the competition: 12 November 2021
Achievement: 1st Place, University Category
Prize: $1,000
REP Students: Julian Chung Zhong Wei, Nick Erwin Chia Zhiyang
Description: Participants were introduced the alternative
energy sources in the simulation game. In this game, participants explored the
four ‘switches’ that make up Singapore's energy grid - natural gas, solar,
regional power grids and low-carbon alternatives. At the same time,
participants were to exercise prudence in introducing new and expensive
technology, while continuously doing Research and Development and making
profits in the simulation. This 2-hour long simulation game tested participants
on their decision-making skills to balance the Energy Trilemma (Sustainability,
Environment and Profitability), while simultaneously reacting to events similar
to real world situations such as supply shortages, government policy changes,
demand fluctuations and land constraints.
